Anastasia - the Red Dress Costume Analysis

Since I have recently finished my own Red Dress and am now sitting on a pile of reference images, I thought that I might share them with all of you. Whether you are planning your own Anastasia cosplay or you are just interested in the musical costumes, I hope that you find this analysis helpful!

(The way this analysis is made is heavily inspired by http://www.galindaswardrobe.com/ 's analysis of the Wicked costumes.)

Here is Linda Cho's original design. We will start with analysis from the top and work our way over all the parts of the costume.

CROWN

The biggest difference you can find is between the Hartford (aka the Pre-Broadway production) and the rest of the productions, with the Hartford crown being much simpler and the shape does not yet resemble the crown from the movie. (Maybe because they could not yet afford the 16-karat gold one that you can can see in the other productions.)

The Broadway crown has 7 upside down teardrop rhinestones of varying sizes, with the second on from the edge being the smallest.

The tour crown varies very little from the Broadway one, the only difference I managed to spot was the fact that the pearls on the top are perhaps slightly bigger.

If you look closely at both the Broadway and the tour crowns, you can spot pearls on the center part, however the side parts are only decorated with rhinestones.

The Spanish crown stays truer to Linda Cho's design, with the fact that it is pointed in the middle. The next difference we can find are the small leaves which are added next to the pearls on the top - a feature also shared by the Stuttgart crown, where the leaves are slightly bigger. Notice that the Stuttgart crown lacks the pearls on the center part.

WIG

The wig in all the productions has a side part, with the right side being styled into a finger wave of varying complexity (the Madrid wig has the most defined finger wave, the tour wig probably the least.)

The Hartford productions appears to have finger waves on both sides - a style the American tour seems to come back to, while Broadway proction change the style to the left side being swept back. Madrid and Stuttgard also have the left side of the wig swept back.

The back updo differs greatly from production to production. In both American productions the curled hair is hidden as much as possible. Madrid uses two simple rolls, Stuttgart has several curls pinned at the back of the head.

And of course, Madrid uses a dark wig to compliment the Jana Gomez's natural dark hair and dark eyebrows.

EARRINGS

Earrings are what remained the same when Anastasia transferred from Hartford to Broadway, so in both productions we can find red teardrop shaped earrings with a rectangle at the earlobe. Tour earrings are simpler, they consist only of golden clip at the earlobe and a red rectangular rhinestone. Interestingly enough, both Madrid and Stuttgart productions seem to be using the same earrings, with a small circular rhinestone at the end.

GLOVES + BRACELET

The gloves appear to be same in all but the Hartford production. The Hartford's ones are longer.

All the American productions have a bracelet on the right hand which is composed of two layers of rhinestones. This bracelet, however, is not present in the European productions.

THE RED DRESS - BODICE

The bodice in all productions is divided into 12 sections and connects to the skirt.

There is a zipper at the back.

As for the lace applique, it appears to be the same in all the American productions (I do not believe that they have changed this part of the dress during the transition to Broawday, that is why there is a connected tier for both Hartford and Broadway).

The Stuttgart bodice appears to be very similar to the American ones, there is only a slight difference in the position of some of the rhinestones.

In the Madrid production, the mesh on which the lace applique is placed is more visible and there are slight alterations to the pattern as well.

As for the shape of the bodice itself, the US tour one appears to slightly more curved than the others.

THE RED DRESS - SKIRT

The red dress is pleated into 12 sections, with 10 of these sections occupied by the lace appliques. At the front it is ankle-length, the back reached to the ground.

The lace appliques are the same length on all the sections of the skirt.

The lace appliques are almost identical in the American production, with the only difference that I was able to find being the fact, that the US tour ones are positioned slightly higher.

The shape of the lace appliques in both European productions appears to be identical.

As for the inside of the skirt, the lining is covered with ruffles. From what I was able to tell, the ruffles in the Broadway production are longer and fewer in number that the Stuttgart ones. I was not able to find references for the tour or Madrid but given the number similarities with the Broadway and Stuttgart production respectively, I believe that even the ruffles will be identical.

THE BUSTLE

The is a bustle underneath the main skirt to keep it nice and poofy.

It is composed of five layers of ruffles and there is also a slightly longer bustle at the back, which is made out of the same fabric as the ruffles on the main skirt. I have only been able to find references from the Broadway production and the Madrid one but I believe that there is little difference in the other productions since the purpose of the bustle is purely functional.

The only difference I was able to spot is with the closing - there appears to be a buckle in the Broadway production which is not used in Madrid.

THE BOTTOM SKIRT The bottom skirt is made of brocade with golden shapes on it. As usual, lots of rhinestones are present as well.

The European fabric appers to be more golden than the Broadway one (I have not managed to find any photos of the tour skirt). The European productions seem to be using the same fabric.

SHOES

The shoes in all the productions appear to be pretty much the same - a simple red ones with high heels.

I believe that this is it! If there is anything you think that I should add (the Dutch production will be added as soon as there are photos from it) or have any feedback for this analysis, I would be very happy to hear it! Just write to me at adnil.cosplay@gmail.com or drop me a message on my Instagram or Facebook and I will surely get back to you!

Also, if you have managed to find any of the references that I am missing and would be will willing to send them my way so that I could add them to this analysis, I will love you forever!
